GREAT ALBUMS
A collection of albums I found worth the price of admission.
They span different styles and eras.
Some are serious, some downright silly, all are good IMO.
Obviously there's thousands of albums I haven't heard.
Some of it is very subjective - Some people hate Springsteen.
I'm not saying these are the best of all time.
I'm just saying I found them worth it. Most of the Best of's were pre 80's.
When bands have several LPs listed I usually listed my favorite ones first.
I suppose these are all at least minor masterpieces, some major.
They went into a studio and came out with a very solid album.
There are so many inconsistent albums made, with 2 great songs, 10 fillers.
But not these albums. Basically they are just albums I recommend buying:
CLASSIC ROCK

Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle - Still an unknown, just before BTR. My favorite of his.
Springsteen - Born To Run - Timeless mix of words and music. 
Springsteen - Darkness On The Edge Of Town - A lot of classics.
Springsteen - The River - Still some great ones, though the car themes are getting old.
Springsteen - Born In The USA - Suprisingly good.
Springsteen - Live 1975-1985 - Tight classics.
Springsteen - The Rising - A nice comeback.
The Who - Quadraphenia (Original LP, not soundtrack) A classic. Brillant.
The Who - The Kids Are Alright (Soundtrack) Great collection of live and studio work.
The Who - Whos Next - Groundbreaking Synth and Guitar work.
The Who - It's Hard - Much better than the overcommercial Face Dances.
Pete Townshend - Deep End (Live) Excellent version of classic Who songs.
Pete Townshend - All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes - Much better than overcommercial Rough Boys
Pete Townshend - Iron Man - Interesting concept album/musical.
Pete Townshend - Scoop Two - Great basement tapes.
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut - Amazing singing by Waters.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - Timeless and perfect.
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon - Pretty much the same.
Pink Floyd - Animals - Great guitar songs, loud.
Pink Floyd - The Wall - Their White Album. Diverse, psychotic.
Roger Waters - Radio Kaos - Catchy, pop attempt of Waters spreading wings. More good tracks than Hitchhiking solo.
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks - Amazing classic. 
Van Morrison - Enlightenment - Solid late recording.
Van Morrison - Days Like These - Another solid recent album.
The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks - Classic.
The Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup - My Favorite Stones album.
The Rolling Stones -  - Some Girls - A great late 70's classic. Cynical, but fun.
The Kinks - Schoolboys in Disgrace - Excellent Album.
The Kinks - Sleepwalker - Another great one. More consistent than their double concept albums.
The Kinks - Misfits - Could have been a double with the last. 
The Kinks - One More From The Road (Live) - Great Live recording of Classic songs.
Lynyrd Skynyd - One More From The Road (Live) - Great Live Recording of Classic songs.
Jethro Tull - Bursting Out Live Great Live Recording of Classic songs.
Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits - Brilliant AND tunefull songs. 
Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding - Solid concept album. Probably the most consistently brilliant lyricist, but a lot of his songs sound like a dog being tortured.
Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind - Consistent recent album.
Bob Dylan - Love and Theft Consistent recent album.
Billy Joel - Turnstyles - Masterpiece. Lyrics and music brilliant.
Billy Joel - The Stranger - Another great one, but not as good as Turnstyles.
Aerosmith - Greatest Hits - Some really great songs.
Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic - Their best LP.
Lou Reed - Berlin - Sick Masterpiece. Sounds great, but is very warped.
Lou Reed - Rock and Roll Animal - Great live album around time of Berlin, Bob Ezrin, Hunter and Wagner.
Lou Reed - Live - Great live album.
The Velvet Underground and Nico - Classic disturbing album, ahead of its time. Maybe first punk album.
Badfinger - The Best Of - Great band singed by Lennon and McCartney.
The Bee Gees - Bee Gees First (Not disco, Beatlesque) - Psychedelic.
The Bee Gees - The Early Years (Like Early Beatles) - Consistent.
The Zombies - Oddessy and Oracle - Masterpiece of vocal harmonies and arrangements. Classic.
Cat Stevens - Greatest Hits - Great songs. A real artist.
Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash At Folsum Prison (Very Dark) - Disturbing songs about suicide, drugs and murder.
Al Stewart - Year of The Cat - Classic. Beautiful.
Al Stewart - Modern Times - Nice Prequel to YOTC.
Alice Copper - Killers - One of the best Hard Rock albums ever. Lead up to WTMN.
Alice Copper - Welcome To My Nightmare - Bizzare concept album. Tuneful songs, and production by Bob Ezrin.
Bob Marley - Legend - His classic tracks. Great collection.
Motown - 25 #1 Hits from 25 years - Tons of classics. Four Tops, Jackson Five, etc.
Bread - Best Of - Solid 70's AOR.
America - Best Of - California easy listening, but good.
Jackson Five - Greatest Hits - Lots of classics.
Crosby Still Nash (& Young) - (The first 4 or 5 LPs were good)
Soft Machine - Three - Experimental English jazz.
Supertramp - Breakfast In America - Classic. Brilliant.
Jim Hendrix - Essential Hendrix (3 record best of) Tons of great songs.
Jim Hendrix - Are You Experienced Way ahead of his time.
Jim Hendrix - Axis Bold AS Love - Also way ahead of his time. Versatile, brilliant, trippy.
Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water - Much better than Yes. Actually melodic and tasteful.
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak - Classic rock and roll songs from Phil Lynnot and great guitarists.
Flash In The Pan - Lights In The Night - Early New Wave. Brilliant. Angus Young's brother who wrote, "Friday On My Mind'.
Queen - News Of The World - Tons of great songs. Ecclectic.
Queen - Night At The Opera - Brilliant harmonies and songs.
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack - Great hard rock album. 
Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes - We're Having A Party - Classic Jersey Shore sound.
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - Brilliant classic from a master.
Dire Straits - Making Movies - Great songs and guitar playing.
David Bowie - Changes One Bowie - Great classics. Ecclectic and innovative style.
Simon And Garfunkle - Greatest Hits - Great folky songwriting and singing.
Paul Simon - Paul Simons Greatest Hits - Same thing, sans Garf.
Foghat - Foghat Live - Great 70's British boogie band live, ala Bad Company.
Eric Carmen - Eric Carmen - Brilliant pop rock. Classic album.
The Rasberries - The Best Of The Rasberries - Brilliant pop rock.
Flo And Eddie - The Best of Flo and Eddie/The Turtles - Great classics. 
Frank Zappa - Sheik Yerbouti - Probably his best album. Funny, versatile, obscene.
J. Geils - Love Stinks - Great early 80's album. Basically the Peter Wolf band. He sang lead and wrote everything.
Neil Young - Harvest - Classic.
Neil Young - Decade - Classic collection of favorite NY songs.
Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps - Classic. Dark, loud and disturbing.
Willie Nile - Golden Down - Masterpiece of lyrics and music.
Willie Nile - Places I have Never Been - More modern, but still brilliant.
Willie Nile - Hard Times in America - same as above. Great lyricist and songwriter.
The Move - Split Ends - From Roy Wood Jeff Lynn, Bev Bevan. Loud, ecclectic and original.
Rickie Lee Jones - Flying Cowboys - RLJ paints her masterpiece.
Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill - Very consistent and smart. Probably their best.
Steve Miller - Greatest Hits - Lots of classics.
Steve Miller - The Joker - Prelude to FLAE.
Steve Miller - Fly Like an Eagle - Great 70's, if a little dated now.
Three Dog Night - Joy To The World - Great collection of hits.
Al Dimeola - Friday Night In San Francisco (Spanish Guitar trio) - Three master guitarists wailing on Spanish guitar.
Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly - Lots of great classic songs. Great songwriter.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - A little dated, but still great record.
Traffic - Low Spark of The High Heeled Boys - Classic 60s.
Warren Zevon - Transverse City - Great words and music. More modern than most of his.
Warren Zevon - Mutineer - Solid rock album.
Warren Zevon - Life'll Kill Ya - Solid Rock album.
Brian Wilson - Smile - BW paints his masterpiece, which is saying something. Could use more volume and pace changes though.
Jerry Garcia - Live - Better than the Dead albums. Probably because its live.
Crabby Appleton - debut - Well, it sounds like Crabby Appleton.

The Clash - London Calling - A sprawling punk masterpiece. 
The Clash (Debut) - What the Pistols would sound like if they had musical talent.
The Deadboys - Young Loud and Snotty - Classic from Stiv and the boys.
The Deadboys - We've Come For Your Children - Another classic punk album.
THe Lords of The New Church (Debut) - Gothic dance. Maybe the only ones worthy of that title outside the Cure.
The Jam - This is the Modern World - Great punk album. Green Day ripped them off. Now a lot of people sound like them from copying Green Day.
Elvis Costello - This Years Model - Great loud and obnoxious Elvis, though it might take afew listens.
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces - More accessible Elvis, but still might take a few spins. His musical changes are strange.
Elvis Costello - Imperial Bedroom - Some great songs though a bit uneven.
Elvis Costello - Punch The Clock - Same.
Elvis Costello - When I was Cruel - Same.
Elvis Costello - Get Happy - Same.
The Sex Pistols - The Great Rock And Roll Swindle - Movie soundtrack. Classic takes. Disco versions of Anarchy in the UK.
The Ramones - End Of The Century - Commercial but some great tracks.
Blink 182 - Enema of The State - Silly but great sense of melody harmony at a loud volume. A silly masterpiece.
Blink 182 - Take off your pants and Jacket - Almost as perfect as the last one in a juvenile way.
Roxy Music - Manifesto - Their most consistent.
The Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes - Brilliant harmonies, great songs from two brothers from Ohio. Influential band.
The Shoes - Present Tense - Same. I think these were both done on 4 tracks amazingly.
Chris Spedding - Guitar Grafitti - Great postpunk, ecclectic album.
Social Distortion - White Light, White Heat, White Trash - Great angry, songs, though they sound similar.
Squeeze - Argy Bargy - Some real classics. Maybe overrated as tunesmiths. Two masterpieces, the rest okay.
The Modern Lovers - Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers - Johnathan Richman is either brilliant or insane.
Madness - One Step Beyond - Great Ska album. They basically started this sound.
Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (With Games  without frontiers) - Probably his best. Groundbreaking and original.
The Police - Every Breath You Take - The Singles - Some great 45s.
Tuff Darts - Tuff Darts - A silly masterpiece. Phone Booth Man, Your Love is Like a Nuclear Waste, Slash, Rats, Here Comes Trouble. Classic NYC punk. Forgotten band.
Human Sexual Response - Figure 14 - Strange, but cool.
Bowling For Soup - A Hangover You Don't Deserve - Silly pop punk like Blink 182.
The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady - Clasic British punk. A little edgy sounding. Like early Wire or Television.
ALTERNATIVE

U2 - War. Their best album. Ecclectic classic.
U2 - The Joshua Tree - Solid collection, if overplayed.
Five For Fighting - AmericaTown - Some brilliant songs and great singing.
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes - Masterpiece. I don't know if she can outdo this. Brilliant musicically and lyrically. I waiting for her followers to cut out their tongues like The World According to Garp.
The Indigo Girls (Debut) - Same. Beautifull harmonies, great lyrics, but probably a peak. Those first albums. Spend your life writing it, write the rest in hotel rooms.
Camper Van Beethoven - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart - Their best from my favorite 80s band. They don't make the most consistent albums, but have some great tracks, and this might be their best.
Dave Mathews Band - Crash - Great instant classics. Great instrumental performances and beautiful songs.
The Killers - Hot Fuss - Brilliant and ecclectic songs. Watch these guys from Vegas. 
Liz Phair - Exit In Guyville - Masterpiece. Worse production than VU and Nico, but tuneful and disturbing.
Counting Crows - August and Everything After - Classic. Perfect alternative album. Round here could have been the Boss or Van Morrisons.
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape - Great album from the real musical talent in Nirvana.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication - Classic. Maybe their most consistent. Finally tuneful.
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom - Great ecclectic mix of styles before she sold out and did generic dance and pop ballads.
The Postal Service - Give Up. - Great electronic pop album from Americans who sound British.
Tracy Chapman (Debut) - Brilliant folksy album.
Tracy Chapman - Crossroads - Same, but not as good as the previous.
Andrew WK - I Get Wet - Fun, loud, dopey album. Every song seems to use the word party. 
Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill - Great alternative scene stealer. Ironic was brilliant.
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See - Weird, trippy, ecclectic.
Better Than Ezra - Delux - Solid alternative rock album.
The Dream Academy - One of the few 80s bands of this style to not produce useless product. Life In A Northern Town stands out.
Radiohead - Okay Computer - Masterpiece of the experimental, modern and bleak. Cynical and weird.
The Verve - Urban Hymns - Classic alternative album when the drugs no longer work.
The Verve - A Northern Song - Loud, experimental alternative rock.
Snow Patrol - Final Straw - Interesting band. Original sound. reminds me of the Psychedelic Furs for some reason. Maybe a little Elliot Smith.
Coldplay X&Y - They are now making better U2 albums than U2. They should have called themselves U3. Excellent rip off artists.
Lindsay Buckingham - Going Insane - Weird experimental pop. A masterpiece though. Dense.
Lindsay Buckingham - Law And Order- Weird experimental pop. Almost as good as Going Insane. Brilliant songwriter.
Collective Soul (Debut) - Solid alternative rock album.
Live - Throwing Copper - Also solid alternative rock album. Will these bands age well? Make a consistent alt album and people think it's the best ever. There's no historical perspective from people in their 20's.
Rocky Erickson - When The Pyramid Meets The Eye - A great tribute to madman Rocky Ericson. Actually a 60's artist, but this tribute is from new bands.
Bush - Sixteen Stone - Solid loud alt rock.
The Gin Blossoms - Congradulations, I'm sorry - Consistent, tuneful, but a little slow.
The Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience - The same.
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation - Great classic from trendsetting alt band. Diverse styles.
Soul Asylum - Dim Light Shine - Great alt rock. Also ecclectic band.
Ten Thousand Maniacs - MTV Unplugged - Classic songs, great performance.
Poi Dog Pondering (Debut) - Spacy, trippy, hippy music.
Eugenius - Oomala - Same thing. Fringes of alternative acid rock.
The Jayhawks - Debut - Solid middle of the road, American alt.
King Missile - Fluting On The Hump - Brilliant lyrics. Insane music. Velvet and Nico ride again.
The Cranberries - To The Faithful Departed - Great tuneful alt rock.
The Spin Doctors - Pocket full of Kriptonite - Solid, if repetitive, catchy album. Good beat and three chords. 
Beaver Nelson - The Last Hurrah - Great alt album bordering on country, ala Richard Shindell, Steve Earl.
Superdrag - Regretfully Yours - Nice, Oasis style music.
Sheryl Crow - (Debut) - Solid album. The singing on Leaving Las Vegas is amazing.
Seventeen Pigmies - Seventeen Pigmies - Wicked cool acid rockers do hippy trippy songs.
Swinging Erudites - Unchained Parodies - Funny band. yuppie Man, Living on My Hair. Goof on 80s music.
The Cure - Mixed Up - Classics remixed. Kind of a best of for extended versions.
The Cure - Kiss Kiss - Great solid album. I'll have to get more and add them.
Richard Shindell - Courier - Masterpiece. Great live album from unknown.
Arcade Fire - Funeral - Strange, ecclectic. Sunf like Ray Davies. The opener is the best. Then maybe Wake up. Original band.
HIP HOP

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP - His most consistent musically.
Eminem - The Eminem Show - Not a bad follow up.
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP - His most antisocial. Maybe the most antisocial songs ever recorded, Berlin or not.
D12 - Devils Night - Great outing from his band.
NWA - Straight Outta Compton - Groubdbreaking rap album. Obscene.
NWA - Niggaz4Life - Same. They changed the genre with these two albums. 

HARD ROCK HEAVY METAL

Black Sabbath (Debut) - jazzy hard rock. Brilliant musicians. Silly lyrics.
Black Sabbath - Paranoid - More sonsistent bu less experiemental.
Black Sabbath - Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath - Their hard rock sound with synths. Nice.
Black Sabbath - Mob Rules - Solid album, despite being a bit commercial and without the Oz.
Black Sabbath - Masters Of Reality - Good album, but a little too tight and condensed. 
Led Zeppelin - anything by them - Supposedly they stole material consistently. But still innovative and brilliant musicians.
Iron Maiden - anything by them - A little goofy, but very consistent. The earlier the better. Killers, NOTB, the debut.
Man Of War - anything by them - Very talented group led by Ross the Boss of The Dictators. Like Maiden. 
Yngwie Malmsteen - Yngwie Malsteen's Rising Force (debut) - His first album is maybe the best rock guitar playing ever recorded.
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizard Of Oz - Great debut from post Sabbath Ozzy. Great guitar, songs, etc. Silly, but solid.
AC/DC - If You Want BLood, You've Got it - Their live album. Angus and company making noise the way it should be done.
AC/DC - Back In Black - Solid, hard rock classic.
